Description
Few elections in the EU are likely to be as important for the Community’s politics as the Hungarian parliamentary election on April 12th. For years, the relationship between Budapest and Brussels has been tense. There are disputes over the rule of law, migration, and above all, Hungary’s stance on Russia. Most recently, in February, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blocked a multi-billion euro EU financial aid package for Ukraine in a dispute over Russian oil supplies. But now Orbán’s right-wing nationalist coalition Fidesz-KDNP, which has governed since 2010, is under pressure: Challenger Péter Magyar and his opposition party Tisza are leading in the polls – and could rearrange the balance of power in Hungary and thus also in the EU.
