Description
Second attempt. Will Kyriakos Mitsotakis make the leap to sole government? Greece’s conservative prime minister had already held out the prospect of a new election shortly after the parliamentary elections in May. It came as expected: After failed coalition negotiations, Greeks will have to go to the polls again. This plays particularly well into the hands of Mitsotakis and his Nea Dimokratia: Thanks to a new electoral law, a sole government can now be formed with around 38 percent of the votes. According to the latest polls, nothing seems to stand in the way of his second term in office. Athens’ future political direction is also important for Europe. Important election issues are the tense relationship with NATO partner Turkey and a dispute over natural gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean.
