Description
It was a tragedy that, according to the polls, will cost the Greek ruling party many votes: A train crash that killed 57 people and a wiretapping scandal have caused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ Nea Dimokratia to lose massive popularity. But the conservative ND still leads the main opposition party, the left-wing Syriza. The future political direction of Athens is also important for Europe: Key election issues are the tense relationship with neighbour and NATO partner Turkey and the dispute over sovereignty and natural gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean.
