Description

A great deal is at stake for President Nikos Christodoulides. On the one hand, Cyprus’s parliamentary election on May 24 falls right in the middle of the country’s EU Council Presidency. Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004. On the other hand, the election is being overshadowed by corruption allegations against Christodoulides, who serves as both head of state and head of government.

Cyprus’s parliament is shaped by a fragmented party landscape. In the current House of Representatives, which consists of seven parties, the dominant conservative DISY is matched by the left-wing AKEL as the second-strongest force. And overshadowing everything is the main political problem of the third-largest island in the Mediterranean: the division, ongoing since 1974, between the Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish-speaking north.
